The old photo album lay open on Sophia’s polished mahogany table, its pages brittle with age, each one a silent testament to a life lived in a thousand different footsteps. Sunlight, thick with dust motes, slanted across the faded images: me, younger, wilder, perched on the hood of a beat-up VW bus, a bandana knotted around my unruly hair, a grin stretching across my sun-kissed face. Another showed me silhouetted against a Moroccan sunset, a silk scarf trailing behind me like a forgotten dream. There were snapshots of bustling marketplaces, windswept coastlines, and faces I could barely recall, fleeting companions on journeys that had once consumed my entire being.
Sophia, her silver hair pulled back in a neat bun, her eyes kind and knowing, pointed a delicate finger at a particularly vibrant shot of me in a crowded Indian bazaar. "Look at you, Elara," she murmured, her voice a soft cadence. "Pure, unadulterated joy. What were you searching for then?"
I traced the outline of my younger self with a fingertip, a strange ache blooming in my chest. "Freedom, I suppose," I said, the word tasting like ash. "The next horizon. Anything that wasn't here, wasn't now." The irony wasn't lost on me. Here I was, decades later, sitting in a tranquil garden, surrounded by the very stillness I’d once fled, with a man who represented everything I’d sworn I’d never want.
