The scent of salt and pine, a familiar perfume of my younger days, filled the air as we drove, the windows down, the wind a wild, untamed thing whipping through my hair. It was a different kind of wild than the one I’d chased across continents, a gentler, more intimate wild that Julian’s hand, resting on my knee, seemed to amplify. We were heading north, towards a coastline I hadn’t seen in years, a place where the woods met the sea in a spectacular, rugged embrace. It felt like a pilgrimage, though to what I wasn’t entirely sure. Perhaps to the Elara who used to greet every dawn with a question mark, every sunset with a sense of unfulfilled longing.
Julian navigated the winding roads with an easy competence, his focus on the journey ahead a mirror to my own internal shift. He didn’t pry, didn’t push, just offered his quiet presence, a steady anchor in the swirling currents of my thoughts.
