The scent of pine and damp earth still clung to me, a phantom perfume of a thousand campfires and windswept plains. It was a scent I’d worn like a second skin for decades, a badge of my nomadic heart. Yet, as I stood on the porch of the little cottage, the one Julian had painstakingly renovated, a different fragrance filled the air – the subtle aroma of brewing coffee, the sweet bloom of the jasmine climbing the trellis, and something else, something entirely new. Julian emerged from the kitchen, a steaming mug in each hand, his smile as warm and steady as the sunrise. He didn’t rush, didn’t demand. He simply offered. “Morning, Elara.”

I took the mug, the ceramic warm against my palms. “Morning, Julian.” The words felt strangely solid, rooted.
