The air in the chamber was thick with the scent of aged parchment and something else, something earthy and ancient, like petrichor after a storm that had raged for centuries. Maya traced the symbols etched into the stone altar, her fingers brushing against the cool, unyielding surface. The whispers, usually a delicate murmur on the edge of her hearing, seemed to coalesce here, weaving a tapestry of hushed voices that spoke of duty, of lineage, of a burden passed down through generations.
"She understood," a voice, soft as moth wings, sighed near her ear. "Elara understood the weight of it."
Maya flinched, her gaze darting around the small, circular room. The flickering torchlight cast dancing shadows that seemed to deepen the mystery. She was alone, yet the sensation of presence was overwhelming. It was the whispers, of course. They had been her constant companions since she’d deciphered the final passage in her grandmother’s journal, the one that spoke of this hidden sanctuary, a place Elara had called the Heart of the Echoes.
