The air grew thin, biting at Maya's exposed cheeks. Each step was a deliberate effort, a testament to the sheer willpower that had propelled her this far. The jagged peaks of the Serpent's Spine, once distant, now loomed like petrified titans, their snow-capped heads scraping against a bruised, twilight sky. The map, clutched in her gloved hand, felt less like a guide and more like a taunt. Its intricate lines had led her through treacherous scree slopes and across windswept plateaus, but the promise of a hidden valley remained elusive.

A low hum vibrated through the soles of her boots, a subtle resonance that seemed to emanate from the very rock beneath her feet. It was a sound she’d come to recognize, a familiar tremor that often preceded a shift in the wind, or in her own perception. She paused, tilting her head, listening. Was it the wind? Or was it… more?

"Are you there?" she whispered, the sound snatched away by the gale. The question felt foolish, directed at the indifferent mountains, at the unseen currents that played with her hair and tugged at her pack. Yet, a part of her, the part that had been slowly unraveling since she’d found her grandmother’s journals, expected an answer.
