Chapter 8
The Riddle of the Sunstone
A riddle etched onto a weathered stone near the falls challenges Alex. With Bramble's silent support, Alex deciphers the cryptic message, revealing the next step in the treasure hunt.
The roar of Whispering Falls had become a familiar, almost comforting sound to Alex. It was a constant symphony of nature’s power, a stark contrast to the hushed secrets held within Elara’s ancient house. The mist, fine as a veil, clung to everything, dampening the rustle of leaves and softening the edges of the world. Alex stood before the cascade, the water plummeting into the churning pool below with relentless energy. It was here, tucked away behind a curtain of spray, that the map had indicated another clue.
The journal, its pages brittle and smelling faintly of dried herbs, had spoken of a “Sunstone,” a marker that would reveal the path forward. Alex had imagined something grand, a jewel perhaps, or a carved monument. But the reality was far more humble, and far more weathered. Nestled in a moss-lined crevice, just beyond the reach of the most aggressive spray, was a large, flat stone. It was smooth on its upper surface, worn by centuries of wind and rain, and etched with faint, almost invisible lines.
Bramble, who had been silently observing from a nearby boulder, let out a soft chuff, a gentle nudge towards the stone. Alex reached out, fingers tracing the cool, damp surface. The etchings were indeed a riddle, a series of symbols and words that seemed to twist and turn like the river itself.
