The air in the attic, thick with the scent of aged paper and forgotten lives, had been a comforting blanket until the map unfurled. Now, a chill that had nothing to do with the draft snaked down Alex’s spine. Whispering Falls. The name itself conjured images of mist and secrets, a place Elara had spoken of in hushed tones during childhood tales, always with a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes. The map, brittle and faded, showed a crudely drawn path leading from the edge of the property, a path that seemed to dissolve into the dense trees bordering the valley.
