Chapter 14
Outsmarting the Hunter
Alex uses their newfound knowledge of the terrain and quick wit to outmaneuver Silas. Rather than a direct fight, Alex employs clever tactics, leaving Silas confounded and thwarted.
The scent of damp earth and pine needles, a fragrance Alex had come to associate with both peril and purpose, filled the air. Silas Croft’s shadow, a persistent stain on the edges of Alex’s journey, had finally solidified into a tangible threat. They were in the Whispering Woods, a place Elara had described with a mixture of reverence and caution, a place where shadows stretched long even at midday and the trees seemed to hold their breath. Alex clutched the worn leather-bound journal, its pages now a roadmap of their family’s secrets, and the faded map, its ink bleeding with the passage of time. The last clue, a riddle etched into the crumbling stone of the Guardian’s Test, had pointed them here, to a place where the ancient oaks formed a cathedral of green.
A twig snapped nearby, sharp and distinct against the rustle of leaves. Alex froze, every nerve ending alight. Bramble, who had been sniffing at a patch of moss, let out a low growl, their fur bristling. Silas. He was closer than Alex had anticipated. The confrontation at the clearing had been a near miss, a dance of evasion, but Alex knew he wouldn’t give up. His greed was a palpable force, a hunger that gnawed at the edges of the wilderness.
“He’s not here for the artifacts, not really,” Alex murmured, more to themselves than to Bramble. “He’s chasing the stories, the glory.” The journal had spoken of Silas, of his reputation as a relentless pursuer of lost treasures, his methods often as brutal as they were effective. But Alex wasn’t a treasure hunter in Silas’s mold. Their quest was born of a deeper need, a yearning for connection to the past that Silas could never comprehend.
