The air in the den was thick with the scent of damp earth and sickness, a cloying perfume that clung to Lyra’s fur and made her cough feel like a shard of ice scraping her throat. Beside her, Zephyr’s breathing was shallow, a ragged sound that tore at her heart. He shivered, a small tremor that ran through his delicate frame, and Lyra nudged him closer with her nose, trying to share her meager warmth. The cold that seeped from their mother’s neglect was far more potent than any winter chill.

Lyra’s gaze drifted to the entrance of the den, where the pale light of dawn was beginning to filter through the tangled roots. Their mother had been there earlier, a silent sentinel with eyes like chips of obsidian, her presence a heavy weight that pressed down on them even when she was gone. Lyra had watched her, as she always did, her small heart a knot of fear and a strange, burgeoning curiosity.

A shadow would pass over her eyes, a flicker of something Lyra couldn’t name, but it felt like sadness. A deep, ancient sadness that seemed to emanate from her very core. Today, as their mother had stood silhouetted against the dim light, her gaze fixed on something far beyond the den’s confines, Lyra had seen it again. A subtle downturn of her lips, a faraway look that spoke of a world Lyra couldn’t fathom, a world before the harshness, before the fear that seemed to rule their lives.
