The air in the den was thick with the scent of damp earth and the faint, metallic tang of sickness. Lyra lay curled against her brother, their small bodies a tangle of shivering limbs. The fever had taken hold of Zephyr during the night, his breaths coming in shallow, ragged gasps that tore at her heart. Even Lyra, who felt the chill of illness creep into her own bones, kept a vigilant watch, her ears twitching at every rustle beyond the den’s entrance. The usual comforting murmurs of the Whispering Woods felt muted, distant, as if the forest itself held its breath.

Lyra nudged Zephyr with her nose, a soft, tentative gesture. He stirred, a low whimper escaping his throat. His eyes, usually bright with mischief, were clouded and dull, reflecting the meager light that filtered through the entrance. "Are you… are you cold, Zephyr?" Lyra whispered, her voice raspy.

Zephyr managed a weak shake of his head, but his fur bristled despite his denial. "Just… tired," he murmured, his voice barely audible. He pressed closer to Lyra, seeking the meager warmth of her body. Lyra wrapped her paws around him, trying to offer all the comfort she could, a futile gesture against the relentless fever. She wished she could draw the sickness out of him, absorb it into herself, but she knew it didn't work that way. The forest had taught her many things, even in her short life, but healing magic was not among them. Not yet, anyway.
