The First Lesson
The forest whispers a warning about the harsh sun and the dangers of the open. Lyra instinctively understands, a strange knowledge settling within her.
The air in the den was thick with the scent of damp earth and fever. Lyra, her small body curled tightly against her brother, shivered despite the oppressive heat. Zephyr’s breathing was shallow, a ragged sound that tore at her heart. His fur, usually so vibrant, seemed dull, and a faint tremor ran through him whenever he stirred. Lyra licked his forehead, a gesture of comfort that felt woefully inadequate. She wished she could lick away the sickness, chase it from his small frame like a persistent fly.
Her own head pounded, a dull ache that pulsed behind her eyes. The sickness had settled into her bones too, a heavy cloak of exhaustion. But Zephyr’s weakness was a sharper pain, a visceral ache that made her own discomfort seem trivial. She watched him, her gaze unwavering, her young mind trying to make sense of the world that felt so precarious. The den, usually a place of shadowed safety, now felt like a trap.
Outside, the sun beat down with a relentless intensity. Lyra could feel its heat even through the packed earth walls of their home. It was a harsh, unforgiving heat, one that promised to bake the very life out of anything exposed. And then, like a breath of cool air against her fevered skin, a whisper brushed against her mind. It wasn't a sound, not exactly, but a feeling, a knowing. *Sun… danger… open…*
