The air in the den was thick and cloying, a stagnant blanket woven from the scent of sickness and despair. Lyra’s small body ached with a dull, persistent throb, a mirror to the ache in her heart. Beside her, Zephyr’s breathing was shallow, each inhale a tiny gasp that tore at Lyra's resolve. His fur, usually a vibrant gold, was matted and dull, his eyes clouded with fever. She nuzzled him, a faint rumble in her chest, a pathetic attempt at comfort that felt as hollow as her own hope.

Their mother had come and gone, a whirlwind of sharp words and colder touches. A brief, dismissive glance at Zephyr, a flick of her tail that spoke volumes of her displeasure, and then she was gone, leaving behind only the lingering chill of her presence. Their father… his shadow was a constant, oppressive weight. Lyra had heard his heavy footsteps pacing outside the den entrance earlier, a low growl rumbling in his chest that sent tremors through the earth. He hadn't entered, not yet, but his presence was a suffocating reminder of the danger that lurked just beyond their fragile sanctuary.

Lyra’s ears twitched. A faint sound, barely perceptible beneath the ragged breaths of her brother and the distant, unsettling murmurs of the forest, began to weave its way into her awareness. It was a hum, a low, resonant vibration that seemed to emanate from the very roots of the world. It was the forest, she knew, the same forest that had always felt like a vast, breathing entity, a presence that both soothed and unnerved her. Lately, the whispers had grown louder, more insistent, a language she couldn't quite decipher but felt deep within her bones.
