The air in the den was thick and still, heavy with the cloying scent of sickness and the faint, metallic tang of fear. Lyra lay beside her brother, her small body curled into a protective crescent around his trembling form. Zephyr’s breath hitched and rasped, each inhale a shallow struggle, each exhale a sigh that seemed to carry the weight of the world. His fur, usually a vibrant, sun-kissed gold, was matted and dull, his eyes half-lidded and glazed with fever. Lyra watched him, her own small chest aching with a dull throb that had nothing to do with the lingering chill of their illness and everything to do with the gnawing anxiety that had become her constant companion.

The rustle of leaves outside the den entrance grew closer, and then the shadow of her mother fell across the opening.

“Still breathing, are we?” The voice was a silken rasp, devoid of warmth, like ice shards scraping against stone. Lyra flinched, her gaze fixed on the dusty floor. She could feel her mother’s eyes, sharp and assessing, scanning the small space, lingering on Zephyr’s weakened state.
