Seeds of Courage
Lyra looks at Zephyr, then towards the sheltering trees. A quiet resolve forms within her. The forest's whispers are becoming her own inner voice.
Lyra’s gaze drifted from Zephyr’s labored breathing to the dappled sunlight filtering through the den’s entrance. Her brother, usually a whirlwind of playful energy, lay still, his small body wracked with fever. A damp leaf, clutched loosely in his paw, was his only companion besides her. The air in the den was thick with the scent of damp earth and sickness, a familiar, suffocating blanket. Lyra nudged Zephyr’s ear gently with her nose, a silent offering of comfort. He stirred, a weak whimper escaping his throat, and his eyes, usually bright with curiosity, were clouded with discomfort.
“Lyra,” he rasped, his voice barely a whisper. “I’m cold.”
Lyra pressed herself closer, sharing her meager warmth. She felt the tremor in his small frame, the rapid beat of his heart against her side. It was a fragile rhythm, easily broken, and a knot of fear tightened in her chest. Their parents had offered no solace, only a curt dismissal of their ailment, a harsh reminder that weakness was a burden they could not afford. The Mother’s eyes had held a flicker of something unreadable – impatience, perhaps, or a deep-seated weariness that mirrored the forest’s own ancient sighs. The Father’s presence, a looming shadow at the den’s mouth, had been a silent threat, his silence more terrifying than any roar.
