Chapter 19
A Promise of Sanctuary
The whispers assure Lyra that the Whispering Woods can offer protection. A place where the cruelty of their home cannot reach them, if they are brave enough.
The air in the den was thick with the scent of sickness, a cloying, damp smell that clung to Lyra’s fur and made her throat ache. Beside her, Zephyr coughed, a weak, rattling sound that tore at her heart. His small body shuddered beneath the thin layer of moss they huddled on, and his breath came in shallow gasps. Lyra licked his forehead, her tongue rough against his feverish skin. It was a futile gesture, she knew, but it was all she had.
The darkness of the den pressed in, a familiar, suffocating blanket. Outside, the sun might be painting the world in hues of gold and emerald, but here, in the cramped space beneath the gnarled roots of an ancient oak, only shadows reigned. Their parents had left hours ago, their heavy footsteps receding into the oppressive silence, leaving behind only the lingering echo of harsh words and colder glares. Lyra tried not to think about them, about the gnawing fear that was as constant a companion as her own heartbeat. Instead, she focused on Zephyr, on the rise and fall of his small chest, on the faint warmth that still lingered beneath his fur.
A flicker of movement caught her eye, a shimmering thread of light weaving its way through the gloom. It wasn’t the harsh glare of the outside world, but something softer, more ethereal. It pulsed with a gentle rhythm, and as it drew closer, Lyra felt a strange sense of calm wash over her. The whispers, faint and elusive at first, grew stronger, weaving themselves into her thoughts like threads of moonlight.
