Chapter 17
A Hidden Path
The whispers guide Lyra to a barely visible trail, winding deeper into the woods. It feels like a secret invitation, a path meant just for them.
The air in the den hung heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and the faint, cloying sweetness of sickness. Lyra’s small body ached with a weariness that went deeper than just the fever. Beside her, Zephyr’s breaths were shallow, ragged sighs that tore at her heart. He whimpered softly in his sleep, a sound that made Lyra’s own throat tighten. She pressed closer, her fur a flimsy shield against the chill that seemed to emanate not just from the stone walls, but from the very air around them.
Their mother had been by earlier, her shadow falling long and cold across the den entrance. Her gaze, sharp and devoid of warmth, had swept over them, lingering for a moment on Zephyr’s pale muzzle. “Still weak,” she’d murmured, the words like pebbles dropped into a still pond, disturbing the quiet but offering no comfort. She hadn't offered a soothing lick, a gentle nuzzle, just that assessment, a pronouncement of their failing. Then, with a swish of her tail, she’d vanished, leaving the silence to press in once more.
Lyra tried to shake off the lingering chill of her mother’s presence. She focused on the faint sounds of the forest filtering in from the world outside. The rustle of leaves, the distant chirping of unseen birds, the soft sigh of the wind through the ancient trees. Usually, these sounds were a comfort, a lullaby that promised the world beyond their small, shadowed home. But today, they felt distant, muffled, as if the sickness had built a wall around their senses.
