Zephyr, feeling stronger, nudges Lyra towards the den's opening. The lure of the outside world, coupled with Lyra's growing curiosity, makes them dare to peek out.
The air in the den hung thick and cloying, a stagnant breath that did little to ease the ache in Zephyr’s small chest. Lyra, curled tightly against his flank, felt the tremor of his shallow breaths against her fur. Even in their shared sickness, a familiar unease settled between them, a quiet hum of their parents' displeasure that permeated the very earth of their hollowed-out home. It was a scent, a feeling, an invisible weight that had pressed down on them since their first breaths.
Zephyr shifted, a soft whimper escaping his muzzle. Lyra instinctively pressed closer, her own throat tight with a fear she couldn't quite name. It wasn't just the fever that plagued them, the dull throb behind their eyes, the weakness that made even the simplest movement an effort. It was the silence of their mother, a silence that screamed louder than any scolding, and the heavy tread of their father, a constant reminder of his displeasure.
“Lyra,” Zephyr rasped, his voice barely a whisper. His golden eyes, usually bright with curiosity, were clouded with a weariness that mirrored her own. “It’s… it’s getting lighter.”
