The Father's Anger

A harsh scolding from the father. Lyra notices his clenched fists, the tension in his shoulders. His aggression stems from a deep well of insecurity.

The air in the den was thick with the scent of damp earth and the acrid tang of fever. Lyra, nestled beside her brother, felt the small tremors that ran through Zephyr’s body. His breaths were shallow, ragged things that did little to ease the heat radiating from his fur. She licked his ear, a small, comforting gesture that felt woefully inadequate against the vastness of his discomfort. Her own throat was raw, her head heavy, but the ache in her own small body was a dull murmur compared to the sharp, burning pain that consumed Zephyr.

The entrance to their den, usually a comforting rectangle of dappled sunlight and the murmur of the forest, was now a dark void. Shadows, long and distorted, stretched across the packed earth, hinting at the approaching night. Lyra strained her ears, listening for the familiar, heavy tread of their father. Each rustle of leaves, each snap of a twig, sent a fresh wave of anxiety through her. Their mother had been by earlier, her presence a chilling storm that had swept through the den, leaving behind only a frosty silence and a further tightening of Lyra’s own small chest. She hadn't offered comfort, only a sharp, dismissive glance that spoke volumes of her disappointment.

Then, the sound. A heavy, deliberate tread that Lyra knew all too well. It wasn't the hurried, anxious pacing of a predator, nor the joyful bound of a creature returning from a successful hunt. This was the sound of purpose, of authority, of a power that coiled and struck without warning. Her small body tensed, her fur bristling along her spine. Zephyr stirred beside her, a weak whimper escaping his lips.
