The afternoon sun dappled through the leaves of the old apple tree, casting dancing shadows on the soft grass. It was a perfect day, the kind that made my fur feel warm and my heart sing with a quiet contentment. I stretched, a long, languid arch of my back, my black fur soaking in the golden light. The air was thick with the scent of ripening apples and the sweet perfume of clover. Curiosity, a feline trait I’ve never quite managed to suppress, tugged at me. I padded closer, my paws making no sound on the grass. She hadn't noticed me. Her world, it seemed, was entirely consumed by her grief.
