Eleanor attempts to share her findings with her former mentor, Professor Finch. His reaction is unexpectedly dismissive, bordering on fearful. Soon after, her research materials vanish, and her office is subtly ransacked.
The sterile gleam of Professor Finch’s office, usually a source of comfort, now felt like a cage. Sunlight, filtered through the heavy oak blinds, cast stripes across the polished mahogany desk, illuminating dust motes dancing like frantic, unseen messengers. Eleanor clutched the worn leather portfolio to her chest, its contents a fragile nest of her most dangerous discoveries. She had rehearsed this conversation a dozen times in her mind, each iteration ending with Finch’s eager pronouncements of support, his academic imprimatur lending weight to her audacious claims. But the reality unfolding before her was a stark, chilling deviation.
Professor Finch, once a beacon of intellectual curiosity, now seemed a man adrift in shallow waters. His eyes, usually sharp and piercing, darted nervously around the room, settling on the framed diplomas, the meticulously organized bookshelves, anything but Eleanor’s expectant gaze. He ran a hand over his thinning grey hair, a gesture of unease Eleanor had never witnessed before.
"Eleanor, my dear," he began, his voice a strained whisper, "you must understand. These... theories of yours. They are quite… imaginative. But the historical record, as you know, is a delicate tapestry. One doesn’t tug at threads without considerable risk of unraveling the whole."
