The air in the cavernous, dimly lit chamber was thick with the scent of old paper and something else, something metallic and sharp, like ozone after a storm. Thorne, seated behind a desk carved from obsidian that seemed to absorb the meager light, gestured with a hand that was surprisingly unblemished, unmarred by the millennia of whispered manipulations he claimed to oversee. Eleanor stood before him, her heart a frantic, trapped bird against her ribs. The initial shock of his presence, the sheer audacity of him orchestrating this clandestine meeting, had begun to recede, replaced by a gnawing dread that coiled in her gut.

"You see, Dr. Vance," Thorne began, his voice a low, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate through the very stone beneath her feet, "you view this as a war. A conflict to be won or lost. But that is the fundamental error of your perspective." He leaned forward, his eyes, dark and fathomless, locking onto hers. "This is not a war. It is stewardship."

Eleanor swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. "Stewardship? You call centuries of deception, of pulling strings from the shadows, of orchestrating events that have led to untold suffering, 'stewardship'?" Her voice, though trembling, carried a fierce edge.
