Chapter 14
A Rendezvous in Shadows
Following the Archivist's directions, Eleanor prepares for a dangerous meeting. She anticipates a confrontation, but the reality of who she is about to face is more profound than she could have predicted.
The coded message from the Archivist had been stark, devoid of the usual cryptic poetry. “Midnight. St. Jude’s Bell Tower. Come alone. The key is the echo.” Eleanor had spent the day oscillating between a gnawing dread and a fierce, almost desperate, resolve. St. Jude’s. An abandoned cathedral on the city’s forgotten edge, its spire a skeletal finger pointing at the bruised twilight sky. The Archivist had never steered her wrong, but this felt different. Or something more metaphorical? An echo of truth, of history, of the unseen war itself?
As dusk bled into night, Eleanor slipped out of her apartment, the city’s neon glow a mocking counterpoint to the encroaching darkness. She walked, not drove, the familiar streets taking on an alien quality under the cloak of night. Each shadow seemed to lengthen, to writhe with unseen life. The air grew colder, carrying the damp scent of decay from the derelict industrial district that surrounded St. Jude’s.
