The Archivist’s words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating, like the dust motes dancing in the single shaft of moonlight that pierced Eleanor’s study. "Consolidation." The word itself felt like a tightening vise, a final, irrevocable step in a game played in the shadows for centuries. She had expected secrets, manipulation, perhaps even a subtle rewiring of history. But this… this was an endgame.
"Consolidation of what?" Eleanor’s voice was a raw whisper, a stark contrast to the measured, almost clinical tone of the Archivist’s transmission. The encrypted channel, a fragile lifeline woven from algorithms and sheer desperation, crackled faintly. She held her breath, waiting for the ghost in the machine to reveal its terrifying truth.
"Control, Eleanor," the Archivist replied, the voice synthesized, genderless, unburdened by human emotion. "Absolute, unquestioned control. They intend to engineer a global crisis, one so profound that the world will willingly surrender its autonomy for a semblance of order. And they will be the architects of that order."
