The King's Return
Silas is released, expecting to reclaim his life and Elara. He finds a woman transformed, no longer his possession but a queen in her own right, protected by a new love.
The air in the small apartment, usually thick with the scent of yesterday’s dinner and Leo’s crayon wax, thrummed with a new, unsettling energy. Elara smoothed the worn fabric of her skirt, a nervous flutter dancing in her stomach like trapped moths. Leo, oblivious, hummed a tuneless melody as he stacked mismatched blocks, his world confined to the vibrant colours and precarious towers. But Elara’s world had just tilted on its axis. The phone call, brief and chillingly familiar, had landed like a stone in her gut. Silas was out. Free. And, predictably, he was coming home.
Home. The word tasted like ash. For so long, “home” had been a fragile concept, a patchwork quilt of borrowed rooms and transient shelters. Then, with Rhys, it had begun to solidify, to acquire the comforting scent of woodsmoke and the steady rhythm of a shared heartbeat. Now, Silas’s looming presence threatened to unravel it all, to reduce the beautiful tapestry she had so painstakingly woven back into a knotted mess of fear and obligation.
She glanced at Leo, his brow furrowed in concentration, his small hands steady as he placed another block. He was the anchor, the reason for the strength that had bloomed within her, the quiet resolve that had replaced the desperate yearning. He deserved this peace, this stability, this gentle light that Rhys had brought into their lives. She wouldn’t let Silas extinguish it.
