Leo, a small, warm weight against her hip, tugged at her worn denim skirt. His innocent gaze, wide and trusting, was a constant anchor, a silent plea for steadfastness. “Mama,” he murmured, his voice a soft murmur against the low hum of the evening breeze, “the fireflies are coming out.”

Elara knelt, her knees sinking into the damp grass, and pulled him close. His small hand, sticky with remnants of the apple he’d devoured, found hers. “They are, little one,” she whispered, her voice a rough echo of the turmoil within.
