The crisp morning air, smelling of dew-kissed pine and the distant, earthy tang of the forest, did little to settle the tremor in Elias’s chest. He sat on a moss-covered boulder overlooking the winding path that led away from the familiar, almost suffocating, walls of the Mage Guild. His staff, once a symbol of his apprenticeship and now his only true companion besides his burgeoning magic, rested against his knee. Its polished wood felt cool beneath his fingers, a stark contrast to the heat that often bloomed behind his eyes when his ‘eyes of God’ were active.

Lyra sat beside him, her back straight, her gaze fixed on the same distant horizon, though Elias suspected her thoughts were far more grounded than his. Her hand, calloused from years of wielding her sword, rested loosely on the hilt of the weapon sheathed at her hip. Even in repose, there was a coiled readiness about her, a quiet strength that Elias had always leaned on.

“It feels… strange,” Elias finally admitted, the words a soft murmur against the rustling leaves. “Leaving. Like stepping off a cliff without knowing if there’s water below.”
