The air in our small lodge grew thin, not with a lack of breath, but with an excess of presence. It was as if the very walls, usually so familiar and steadfast, had begun to shimmer, to breathe a different kind of air, one scented with starlight and the hushed secrets of distant nebulae. Kaelen, his hand, weathered by seasons and etched with the stories of our people, rested on my own. His touch, always a comfort, now vibrated with an unfamiliar energy, a resonance that echoed the tremor in my own heart.
“Do you feel it, Elara?” he murmured, his voice a low rumble that seemed to stir the dust motes dancing in the shafts of moonlight that pierced the gloom.
I nodded, unable to form words. It was a feeling akin to standing on the precipice of a vast, unknown ocean, the tide pulling with an irresistible force. For days, it had been a subtle hum beneath the surface of our lives, a melody played on instruments I couldn’t quite discern. Now, it swelled, a symphony of celestial invitation. Visions, fleeting at first, had begun to weave themselves into the fabric of our waking hours and our dreams. The majestic eagle, its wings a span of twilight, would circle, its gaze piercing yet benevolent. And then, the luminous beings, their forms indistinct yet radiating an overwhelming sense of peace, would appear, their silent presence a balm to a soul I hadn’t realized was aching for something more.
