Aria’s breath hitched, a tiny, involuntary sound swallowed by the oppressive quiet of the forest. She’d felt it for the last mile, a prickling sensation on the back of her neck, the unnerving certainty of being watched. It wasn’t the furtive, ancient gaze of the forest spirits, nor the chilling awareness of the shadows that lurked just beyond the silver thread’s luminescence. This was different. It was… known. A familiar weight, a protective presence that had always been a balm to her soul, now felt like a tightening constraint. She stopped, her hand instinctively reaching for the smooth, cool surface of a moss-covered boulder.

The silver thread pulsed gently, its light a soft, unwavering beacon in the deepening twilight. It continued to beckon her forward, a silent promise of answers, but her feet remained rooted. The air grew heavy, charged with an unspoken tension that had nothing to do with the encroaching darkness and everything to do with the unseen observer.

“You can come out now,” she said, her voice barely a murmur, yet it carried a surprising firmness. “I know you’re there.”
