The silver thread pulsed, a faint luminescence against the deepening twilight, tugging Aria onward. She moved with a newfound urgency, the oppressive silence of the woods no longer a passive void but an active, watchful presence. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, felt like a breath held, a prelude to something unseen. The trees themselves seemed to lean in, their gnarled branches like skeletal fingers, their dense canopy a suffocating blanket against the sky. She’d lost sight of the thread for a flicker, her heart leaping into her throat, only to find it again, a shimmering lifeline in the encroaching gloom.

The terrain began to shift. The tangled undergrowth thinned, replaced by a carpet of moss so thick and green it seemed to absorb all sound. The air grew colder, carrying with it a damp, earthy scent, mingled with something else… something ancient and mineral. Then, through a curtain of hanging vines, she saw them.
