Chapter 5
The Sapphire's Clue
As midnight strikes, Anya flees, leaving behind a single, exquisite sapphire slipper. The Prince, heartbroken and determined, vows to find the mysterious woman who stole his heart, the slipper his only clue to her identity.
The grand ballroom, a kaleidoscope of shimmering silks and polished brass, seemed to hold its breath. The music, a lilting waltz that had danced through the air for hours, faltered, then stilled. A hush fell, broken only by the frantic thumping of Anya’s own heart against her ribs. Midnight. The word echoed in her mind, a tolling bell of impending doom. Anya’s breath hitched. His words, meant to be a plea, felt like a tightening noose. Her secret, so carefully guarded, so exhilaratingly free, was about to be snatched away. The image of her stepmother’s sneering face, her stepsisters’ envious glares, flashed before her eyes. She couldn’t go back to that. Not now. Not after this taste of joy.
