The roar of the waterfall was a primal song, a curtain of mist and thunder that hid the entrance to a world unseen. Kenji, chest heaving, clutched the tattered map, its cryptic lines now glowing with an almost feverish luminescence under the diffused light. He had followed them through treacherous ravines and over crumbling scree, each step a testament to a hope that burned brighter than any kiln fire. The map spoke of a ‘Veil of Tears,’ a place where the mountain wept, and now, before him, it cascaded down a sheer cliff face, a shimmering, aqueous wall.

He hesitated for a heartbeat, the spray cool against his sweat-slicked skin. The air thrummed with an energy he couldn’t quite name, a palpable sense of ancient power. Master Ishikawa’s words, laced with veiled warnings about the folly of chasing ghosts, echoed faintly in his mind, but they were drowned out by the insistent pulse of the waterfall and the thrumming in his own veins. This was it. The journey’s end, or perhaps, its true beginning.

With a deep breath, Kenji plunged through the watery curtain. The initial shock of the cold was immediate, stealing his breath and blurring his vision. He stumbled, his feet finding purchase on slick, submerged stones, and then, with a final surge, he burst through the other side.
