Chapter 4
A Mentor's Shadow
Returning to his village for supplies, Kenji finds a chilling reception. His mentor, Master Ishikawa, once a figure of respect, now radiates a palpable jealousy. During a seemingly innocuous demonstration of a new firing technique, Ishikawa springs a trap, attempting to steal Kenji's map and notes. Kenji narrowly escapes the collapsing kiln, the heat searing his skin and his trust turning to ash. The betrayal cuts deeper than any physical wound. He realizes his mentor's outward wisdom masked a desperate greed, a desire to reclaim lost glory by any means necessary. Kenji flees, the shattered remnants of his mentor-apprentice bond a stark reminder of the true cost of ambition.
The air in the village, usually thick with the comforting scent of woodsmoke and damp earth, now carried a subtle, acrid undertone. Kenji, his satchel heavy with the few provisions Hana had pressed into his hands – dried fish, a few precious roots, and a small pouch of charcoal for drawing – felt a prickle of unease. He’d only been gone a handful of days, chasing the whispers of the jade glaze through forgotten valleys and along treacherous mountain passes, yet the familiar lanes seemed to hold a new tension. Faces turned away as he passed, conversations ceased, and a heavy silence fell in his wake. It was a stark contrast to the eager curiosity that had greeted him when he’d first announced his quest.
He found Master Ishikawa by the communal kiln, his back to Kenji, his ample frame silhouetted against the flickering flames. The old potter was demonstrating a new firing technique to a small cluster of villagers, his voice, usually a resonant baritone, now edged with a sharp, almost brittle quality. Kenji approached, a knot tightening in his stomach. He’d expected a stern lecture, perhaps, or a dismissive wave of the hand, but not this palpable aura of resentment that seemed to cling to his mentor like soot.
“Master Ishikawa,” Kenji began, his voice a little too loud in the sudden lull.
