The air in their sanctuary, once thick with the comforting scent of old paper and dust motes dancing in slanted sunlight, now thrummed with a palpable tension. Liam’s hand, calloused and strong, rested on Elara’s shoulder, his grip a silent question. “They’re here,” he breathed, his voice rough with an emotion that was more than just concern. It was a primal instinct, honed by years of training and an unwavering devotion.
Elara’s breath hitched. The shadows in the corners of the room seemed to deepen, coalescing into indistinct shapes that mirrored the unease coiling in her stomach. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a wild bird trapped in a cage. She could feel it, a tremor in the very fabric of the world around her, a dissonant chord that spoke of intrusion. “How do you know?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper, though the question felt futile. Liam always knew. He saw what others missed, heard what remained unheard. His gaze, usually sharp and assessing, was now clouded with a grim determination.
