The flickering candlelight cast long, dancing shadows across the war room, mirroring the unease that still clung to me like the damp castle air. It had only been a few days since the initial attack, a brutal reminder that Eldoria was not as secure as I had once believed, and that the whispers of danger I’d dismissed as idle gossip were, in fact, chillingly real. Now, huddled over maps with Kaelen, the Duke, the tension between us had transformed. The icy politeness that had defined our early interactions had begun to thaw, replaced by a nascent warmth, a shared urgency that bound us in a way no royal decree ever could.

Kaelen’s brow was furrowed in concentration, his gaze sweeping over the strategically placed markers on the parchment. The harsh lines of his face, usually so unreadable, were softened by the glow of the fire, revealing a weariness I hadn't noticed before. He pointed to a cluster of villages on the northern border. "These are the most vulnerable. If they strike here again, they could push further inland before our scouts can even muster."

I leaned closer, tracing the route with my finger. "But the roads are treacherous this time of year. Snowfall would slow any invading force, giving us precious time to reinforce." My mind, usually prone to flights of fancy and romantic notions, felt sharp, focused. The fear of what might happen to Kaelen’s people, *our* people, had sharpened my senses, clearing away the fog of apprehension that had clouded my judgment for so long.
