The air in the Duke’s private study felt heavy, not with the oppressive silence that had characterized my first few days here, but with a palpable tension. Duke Kaelen had summoned me, and the summons, delivered by a silent, stoic guard, had carried an unusual urgency. I smoothed the fabric of my gown, my heart a nervous flutter against my ribs, and stepped through the heavy oak door.

He stood by the tall, arched window, his back to me, silhouetted against the fading afternoon light. The usual meticulous order of his dress was slightly disheveled, a few strands of dark hair falling across his brow. He turned as I entered, and I saw a new expression etched onto his usually impassive features – a raw, unvarnished concern that was startlingly unlike the distant Duke I had come to know.

"Princess Anya," he said, his voice deeper, rougher than usual. The formal address, usually a barrier, now sounded like a plea. "Thank you for coming."
