The scent of old paper and dried flowers always clung to Grandma’s armchair, a comforting aroma that Lily remembered even now, years later. It was in that very chair, bathed in the soft, dusty light that slanted through the lace curtains, that Grandma had spoken the words that echoed in Lily’s heart. “She is chosen,” Grandma had whispered, her voice thin but firm, directed at Lily’s mother, who had been pale and weary even after the ordeal of bringing Lily into the world. Lily, a tiny bundle then, had known nothing of the struggle, but her mother had carried the weight of it, both physically and in her soul.

Now, as Lily sat in a quiet corner of the library, the hushed whispers of turning pages a gentle balm to her restless spirit, those words resurfaced with a new clarity. *Chosen.* It had sounded so grand, so important, when she was younger. But then life had unfurled, and Lily had found herself wrestling with its sharp edges, feeling less like a chosen one and more like a forgotten fragment. There were times when the world felt like a puzzle with too many missing pieces, and she was just one of them, lost and insignificant. The scraped knees, the misunderstandings, the moments of loneliness that felt like a gaping hole in her chest – they had all chipped away at her, leaving her feeling brittle, like a dropped teacup that had been glued back together, the cracks still visible.

She traced the worn cover of a book, her fingers finding solace in its familiar texture. She remembered the sting of tears when a friendship fractured, the ache of disappointment when expectations crumbled like dry leaves. There were days she had felt so small, so powerless, as if the world was a giant, indifferent hand that could crush her at any moment. Her mother, always so loving, had done her best to shield her, to mend the little hurts, but some wounds ran deeper. Lily had learned to hide them, to plaster on a brave smile, but inside, the feeling of being broken persisted.
