Chapter 7
The Thief's Gambit
Elias, driven by a newfound loyalty, decides to use his illicit skills for Aerion's protection. He devises a daring plan, venturing into the dangerous world of courtly intrigue.
The rain had finally relented, leaving the cobbled streets slick and gleaming under the flickering gas lamps. A damp, earthy scent rose from the stone, mingling with the ever-present aroma of roasted coffee and baked bread that spilled from the cafe’s open door. Rumors of a plot, a serpent coiled around the heart of the kingdom, its venom aimed squarely at the throne. And Aerion, unknowingly, was at its center. The thought of him, so gentle and vulnerable, caught in such a dangerous game, sent a cold dread through me that was far more potent than any fear of the guard. My usual instinct, the one that screamed self-preservation, was being drowned out by a fierce, unfamiliar protectiveness. I, Elias, the thief who looked out for number one, found myself wanting to look out for him.
