The air in the little back room of The Gilded Mug hummed with a nervous energy that had nothing to do with the usual clatter of mugs and the murmur of conversation from the main room. It was the kind of quiet that felt louder than any noise, pregnant with anticipation. Aerion sat across from me, his hands resting on the worn oak table, his knuckles white. He looked less like a prince and more like a hunted deer, his eyes wide and dark, darting towards the door every few moments. I, on the other hand, felt a strange calm settle over me, a sharp contrast to the storm brewing outside and within.

“Are you sure about this, Elias?” he whispered, his voice barely audible above the distant rumble of a carriage. “This… this is treason we’re talking about. If they discover our involvement…”

I leaned forward, my gaze steady on his. “They won’t. Not if we play this right. You’ve done your part, Prince. You’ve given me the proof, the names. Now it’s my turn to… well, to do what I do best.” I offered a faint smile, trying to inject a bit of my usual swagger into the tense atmosphere, though my stomach churned with a mixture of adrenaline and something akin to fear. This wasn't picking a pocket or slipping past a guard; this was playing with fire, with lives.
