Chapter 16
Elias's Resolve
Witnessing Aerion's transformation solidifies Elias's feelings. His initial self-interest gives way to a profound desire to protect Aerion and build a future with him.
The scent of roasted beans and warm pastries was usually my comfort, a familiar blanket against the chill of my usual existence. But lately, it felt different. It felt like hope, like a quiet promise whispered in the steam rising from my cup. Seeing Aerion, truly seeing him shed the weight of his title, even for a few stolen moments, had changed something fundamental within me. The roguish charm that had always been my shield, my tool, now felt like it belonged to someone else, someone I no longer entirely recognized.

My own demons, usually kept locked away, had stirred, recognizing a kindred spirit.
My life had always been about the next score, the quick escape, the careful calculation of risk versus reward. Survival was the only creed I truly understood. But Aerion… Aerion made me want more than just survival. He made me want a future, a shared one. The thought was both terrifying and exhilarating. It was a dangerous path, one paved with uncertainties and the ever-present threat of exposure, but for him, it felt like the only path worth taking.
