The scent of roasted beans and cinnamon always settled something in my chest, a quiet hum against the usual frantic thrum of my life. Today, though, the familiar comfort of The Gilded Mug felt thin, like a worn tapestry stretched too taut. Aerion sat across from me, his fingers tracing the rim of his teacup, his gaze lost somewhere beyond the rain-streaked window. He looked like a prince, all regal lines and quiet grace, but beneath the surface, I’d come to know, there was a storm brewing.
“You’re quiet today,” I said, my voice softer than I intended. We’d fallen into a rhythm, this quiet camaraderie, these stolen hours in the cafe that felt more real than any grand hall or shadowed alley.
He offered a faint smile, a fleeting thing that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Just… thinking.”
