The rain had been a persistent, drumming companion for days, turning the cobblestone streets into slick, glistening rivers and driving most sensible folk indoors. For me, it was just another excuse to linger in the warm, honeyed glow of ‘The Gilded Spoon.’ The scent of roasted coffee beans and sweet pastries was a balm, a stark contrast to the damp chill clinging to my cloak. I nursed a lukewarm mug of what vaguely passed for tea, my gaze drifting over the worn wooden tables, the chipped porcelain cups, and the faces of the few other souls seeking shelter. He clutched a small, leather-bound satchel to his chest as if it contained the crown jewels themselves. I’d seen his type before – men on the run, men with secrets too heavy to carry openly. My thieving instincts, honed by years of careful observation, pricked at me. He wasn't just hiding from the rain; he was hiding from something, or someone.
