Chapter 9
The Archivist's Secret
Corbin visits a reclusive archivist who Dr. Reed consulted. The archivist, terrified, reveals Dr. Reed was researching a power source, a 'heart of the world,' that could reshape reality. He gives Corbin a fragmented map.
The rain, a relentless, drumming presence, had been Corbin’s unwanted companion for the past two days. It washed the city clean, or so the optimists claimed. Corbin saw only a smear of grey, a world perpetually under a shroud. Dr. Evelyn Reed’s study, however, remained untouched by the downpour, a pristine, chilling tableau of her final moments. The scent of old paper, polished wood, and something faintly metallic, like old blood, still clung to the air, a phantom perfume of death.
He’d returned to the scene, not for new evidence – the forensics team had been meticulous, perhaps too meticulous, leaving nothing but sterile emptiness – but for the ghost of a feeling. A hunch. Reed had been a creature of habit, a scholar whose life was etched in the organized chaos of her work. He’d spent hours sifting through her notes, her books, trying to find a pattern, a deviation, anything that screamed ‘why.’ The artifact, a smooth, obsidian sphere etched with symbols that seemed to writhe under his gaze, still rested in its evidence bag on his desk, a silent, mocking enigma.
His mind kept drifting back to a name that had surfaced in Reed’s digital correspondence, a name mentioned with an almost reverent caution: Alistair Finch. A recluse, an archivist of forgotten lore, a man who, according to the digital breadcrumbs, had been Reed’s last point of contact before her death. Finch lived, or rather, holed up, in a dilapidated brownstone on the city’s fringe, a district that seemed to have been forgotten by time and progress.
