The sterile hum of the precinct felt like a mockery of the vibrant, chaotic world Dr. Evelyn Reed had so passionately explored. Detective Miles Corbin sat hunched over a mountain of her research papers, the scent of aged parchment and exotic spices clinging to them like a second skin. He’d been pulling all-nighters for three days, fueled by lukewarm coffee and a gnawing sense of unease that had settled deep in his gut since he first saw the archaeologist’s lifeless eyes staring at the ceiling.

The official report was a neat, sterile thing: blunt force trauma. But the scene itself had screamed a different story.
