Chapter 7
The First Threat
Corbin experiences a near-fatal 'accident' – his car brakes fail. He narrowly escapes. This confirms his suspicions: Dr. Reed's murder was not random, and the perpetrators are actively trying to silence anyone pursuing the truth.
The city, usually a symphony of honking horns and distant sirens, seemed to hold its breath as Miles Corbin steered his aging sedan through the pre-dawn gloom. The sky was a bruised purple, promising a sun that felt a lifetime away. His mind, however, was far from the dawn. It was a tangled mess of ancient symbols, fragmented notes, and the chilling stillness of Dr. Evelyn Reed’s study. The artifact, a thing of obsidian and intricate, alien geometry, still felt heavy in his mental grasp, a tangible piece of a puzzle that had claimed its creator and now threatened to claim him.

It was the kind of sound that usually preceded a rough patch, a pothole, something mundane. But Corbin’s instincts, honed by years of navigating the grimy underbelly of human nature, pricked at him.
He pressed the brake pedal, intending to ease his speed for the upcoming curve. Nothing. A sickening lurch in his stomach as the pedal sank further, meeting no resistance. He slammed his foot down, a surge of adrenaline flooding his system. Still nothing. The car, with a terrifying lack of control, continued its forward momentum, picking up speed. The hum intensified, a mechanical scream of failing parts.
