The scent of old paper and something metallic, sharp and coppery, hung heavy in Dr. Evelyn Reed’s study. Detective Miles Corbin stood amidst the disarray, his gaze sweeping over the overturned chair, the scattered books, the faint, almost invisible scuff marks on the polished oak floor that spoke of a struggle. His partner, Detective Miller, was meticulously bagging evidence, his movements quiet and deliberate, a stark contrast to Corbin’s own internal tempest.
