The air in the museum’s basement was thick with the scent of dust and decay, a perfume that clung to Detective Miles Corbin like a second skin. He’d spent more time in places like this than he cared to admit, tracing the outlines of lives long extinguished, piecing together narratives from forgotten fragments. But this was different. This smelled of something more recent, a violation that echoed through the ages.
Anya Sharma, her face pale and drawn, clutched a rolled-up parchment as if it were a lifeline. The fragmented map, painstakingly reassembled from Dr. Reed’s scattered notes, had led them here, to a place unmarked on any official blueprint, a forgotten annex beneath the sprawling edifice of the city’s most prestigious museum. The ‘Order of the Veil,’ Dr. Reed had called them in her last, frantic scribblings. Corbin had initially dismissed it as the ramblings of a dying woman, but the more he dug, the more the name coalesced into a tangible, terrifying presence.
"Are you sure this is it, Anya?" Corbin’s voice, usually a low rumble, was hushed, a concession to the oppressive silence of the subterranean space.
