Chapter 11
Anya's Courage
Following a second, more direct threat from Vance's associates, Anya overcomes her fear. She uses her knowledge to decipher more of the star chart, revealing a specific geographical location linked to the lost civilization.
Anya Sharma’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage of bone. The alleyway had been dark, the air thick with the stench of stale refuse and something metallic, something that spoke of violence. Two men, shadows with eyes that glinted like shards of obsidian, had cornered her. They hadn’t spoken, not in words, but their intent had been as clear as a shouted threat. A brush of cold steel against her arm, a mere whisper of a warning, and then they were gone, melting back into the oppressive night as if they had never been.
She had stumbled back to her apartment, the pristine white walls now seeming to mock her with their sterile calm. Dr. Reed’s study, once a sanctuary of knowledge, now felt like a tomb. The image of her mentor, pale and still, the strange artifact clutched in her lifeless fingers, flashed behind Anya’s eyes. And now this. Vance’s reach, it seemed, extended far beyond hushed boardrooms and veiled threats. He was willing to spill blood, to silence anyone who stood in his way.
For days, Anya had been paralyzed by a fear so profound it threatened to consume her. She’d retreated into herself, poring over Dr. Reed’s notes, tracing the intricate lines of the star chart, but her mind felt like a fogged-up window, unable to focus. The weight of what she knew, of what Dr. Reed had been trying to uncover, pressed down on her, suffocating. She was just a historian, a quiet woman who preferred the company of ancient texts to the harsh realities of the present. How could she possibly stand against a man like Silas Vance?
