The air in Alistair’s study, usually thick with the comforting scent of aged paper and dust motes dancing in sunbeams, now felt charged, brittle. He sat hunched over the journal, its brittle pages spread before him, a map of forgotten sins and whispered anxieties. Clara, perched on the edge of a worn leather armchair, her expression a mixture of impatience and grudging curiosity, tapped a pen against her knee. The silence between them was a palpable thing, heavier than the afternoon heat pressing against the windowpanes.

“Anything?” she prompted, her voice cutting through the stillness.

Alistair didn’t look up. His fingers, stained with ink and the faint residue of old bindings, traced a peculiar symbol on the page. It was a recurring motif, a knot of interwoven lines that seemed to writhe with a life of its own. He’d seen it before, subtly incorporated into the architecture of the town’s oldest buildings, a detail so ingrained in the fabric of the place that most overlooked it entirely. But this symbol, inked with a frantic urgency in the journal, felt different. It felt like a signature.
