The air in the chamber was thick, cloying with the scent of ages past and something else, something acrid and primal that clung to the back of Alistair’s throat. Dust motes danced in the faint, ethereal light that seeped from the cracks in the ancient stones, illuminating the colossal obsidian slab at the center of the room. He’d spent years deciphering fragments, piecing together the fragmented accounts of the founding families, the hushed legends of a covenant made in blood and shadow. Now, the truth was laid bare, a monstrous testament to a pact he could barely comprehend. “Not a sanctuary, Clara. A cage.”
