The air within the forgotten ruin was thick with the dust of ages, a palpable shroud that clung to Alistair’s throat and whispered of forgotten lives. Each step echoed unnervingly in the cavernous space, a solitary drumbeat against a silence that felt ancient and watchful. Clara, a few paces behind him, moved with a hunter’s quiet grace, her hand instinctively resting near the small, worn leather-bound notebook tucked into her jacket pocket. The stone beneath their feet was uneven, worn smooth by the passage of countless feet, or perhaps something else entirely.

“It’s… larger than I imagined,” Alistair murmured, his voice barely disturbing the stillness. He ran a gloved hand over a section of the wall, tracing the faint outline of a symbol almost entirely eroded by time. “The journal mentioned a ‘heart of stone,’ a place where the earth itself held its breath. This must be it.”

Clara’s gaze swept across the vast chamber, her eyes sharp and assessing. “It’s certainly designed to impress, or perhaps to intimidate. A grand entrance for whatever lies beyond.” She nudged a loose stone with the toe of her boot. “But what lies beyond is what matters.”
